We left on Sunday April 6, 1958 for Bowling Green, then took the L&N Train No. 98 for Cincinnati, arriving that night. We then took the 11:25 p.m. B&O Train No. 4 for Washington. After a night of no sleep for just about anyone, we had breakfast on the train, and arrived in Washington, D.C. about noon. In Washington that Monday, we saw the sights, including the Lincoln Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. That Monday night we stayed at the Hotel Annapolis where we had dinner. That night, most of us headed to the Casino Royale nightclub, not far from our hotel. It was one of the few places that would accomodate high-school age visitors. On Tuesday we saw more sights, including the White House, Smithsonian Museums, the Supreme Court, and the U.S. Capitol where we had a group photo made. That afternoon we took a train to Jersey City, NJ and then a bus ferry into Manhattan. Along the way we could see the Statue of Liberty. We stayed at the Governor Clinton Hotel in Manhattan (7th Avenue and 31st Street). On Wednesday we were sidewalk visitors at the Dave Garroway Show, trying to get the camera operator to do a shot of us for the folks back home. We then took a 3-hour Circle Line Yacht tour around Manhattan, with views of Harlem, Yankee Stadium, and the United Nations. That afternoon we went to the Radio City Music Hall and saw the world-famous "Rockettes." That evening we went to see a Broadway production of "Li'l Abner" starring Stubby Kaye. On Thursday morning we took a bus to the United Nations with a guided tour through the General Assembly Building. We made numerous other stops including the Empire State Building, Greenwich Village, the Bowery, and Chinatown. That afteroon we reluctantly left New York, heading across the Hudson to Jersey City, then by train back to Cincinnati, arriving there early Friday morning. And from there, we took another train back to Bowling Green, and thence back to Russellville, arriving home late that Friday afternoon. It was an event-packed but unforgettable class trip!
